Windows Hello is a more personal and secure way to sign in to your Windows device. Instead of using a password, with Windows Hello you can sign in using facial recognition, fingerprint, or a PIN.
These options help make it easier and safer to sign into your PC because your PIN is only associated with one device, and it's backed up for recovery with your Microsoft account.
Click the Start button (Windows icon).
Click Settings (gear icon).
Click Accounts.
Click Sign-in options.
Under Sign-in options, find PIN (Windows Hello).
Click Set up.
You may be asked to verify your identity (enter your current password).
Enter a new PIN (numbers only, 6 digits recommended) and confirm it.
Click OK.
Tip: Your PIN is tied to this specific device. It is not the same as your account password and doesn't need to match it.
Under Sign-in options, look for Facial recognition (Windows Hello).
If you see this option, click Set up.
Click Get Started.
Look directly at your camera and follow the on-screen prompts.
Once finished, click Close.
Don't see this option? Your device doesn't have the camera hardware needed for face recognition. Your PIN will still work fine.
Under Sign-in options, look for Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
If you see this option, click Set up.
Click Get Started.
Touch the fingerprint reader as prompted (you'll do this several times to capture the full print).
Click Close when complete.
Don't see this option? Your device doesn't have a fingerprint reader. Your PIN will still work fine.
Do I still need my password? Rarely. Your PIN, face, or fingerprint replaces typing your password day to day.
What if Windows Hello doesn't recognize me? Just enter your PIN instead. It always works as a backup.
I forgot my PIN. Go to Settings>Accounts>Sign-in options>PIN>I forgot my PIN and start the wizard to recover
Will this work on my personal phone or home computer? No, this is set up per device and only applies to your work computer.
Is this safe? Yes. Your face and fingerprint data stays encrypted on your device and is never sent anywhere, including to us.
